Following reports that Arsenal had made a £60 million approach for the Ecuadorian midfielder, Moises Caicedo has informed Brighton and Hove Albion that the time has come for him to depart.

The 21-year-old claimed that by refusing to sell him, the Seagulls would be blocking him from seizing a “magnificent chance.”

While Brighton is hesitant to sell after losing Leandro Trossard to Premier League leaders Arsenal last week following the Belgium winger’s fallout with head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Chelsea has also expressed interest in Caicedo.

De Zerbi has pleaded with the in-demand Caicedo to stay at the Amex Stadium—at least temporarily—but the player seems to have made up his mind.

In a statement on Instagram, Caicedo thanked club owner Tony Bloom and expressed the hope that Brighton fans would comprehend why he wants to go on.

“I am grateful to Mr Bloom and Brighton for giving me the chance to come to the Premier League and I feel I have always done my best for them. I always play football with a smile and with heart,” Caicedo’s statement read.

“I am the youngest of 10 siblings from a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador. My dream [was] always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador.

“I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.

“The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity.”

Speaking earlier on Friday, De Zerbi expressed the hope that Caicedo would stay for the remainder of the season, feeling that he was “focused solely on Brighton.”

But things have changed since then.

It may be possible for Brighton, who are currently sixth in the Premier League, to make the playoffs in Europe next year, but it will get harder if they keep losing talented players.

De Zerbi commented on Caicedo’s predicament before the player’s statement became public: “I met with him on Wednesday, and I told him my opinion.

“I think it’s always difficult to change inside the season because you can find more problems. It is important to stay another four months.”
