With the World Cup over, Players look to secure a move to other clubs
Especially Players that impressed at the Qatar World Cup
The Winter Transfer begins in January
The World Cup is over, but the winter transfer window is around the corner, with plenty of action expected.
Now that the 2022 World Cup is over, the regular season with European clubs has already begun. The winter transfer window will formally open at the beginning of January, but some clubs are already working to sign and sell players at this time.
With more players being exposed due to the World Cup, clubs are moving quickly to sign players who performed exceptionally well in the previous month while also trying to foresee other players who might enter the race.
We look at some players who made a name for themselves to sign in Qatar.
5. Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea)

One of the top players at the 2022 World Cup was the winger for Chelsea. Ziyech had a goal and an assist in each of his seven games, helping Morocco advance to the semifinals of the competition for the first time. Right now, his future at Chelsea is in doubt. Many European teams were interested in loaning him out during the summer, but the player stayed with the club. Given that he has only participated in nine games with his club thus far, and despite hiring new coach Graham Potter, things could change in January.
4. Cody Gakpo (PSV)
The 2022 World Cup’s most unexpected striker. Dutch striker Cody Gakpo demonstrated that he is prepared to take the next step by scoring three goals in five games. PSV retained him in the summer despite the interest of numerous teams, including Manchester United, who ultimately decided to sign former Ajax winger Antony. Gakpo is now worth more than the €50 million PSV wanted to charge for him, so whoever wants him will have to shell out more money. He will likely try to sign with Manchester United and other European teams in 2023.
3. Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina)

The Moroccan player was yet another major surprise in the competition. One of the best players in the World Cup was the Fiorentina midfielder. Sofyan Amrabat has started 20 games for Fiorentina this season and is a regular starter. Still, it’s fair to say that his performance at the World Cup has surprised everyone, including those who watch him play in Italy every weekend. He demonstrated that he is a midfielder who can bring quality to many European clubs that are looking for a central midfielder of this type in his performances, particularly against Spain and Portugal. Because he spent more than €20 million to acquire the player in 2023, Fiorentina’s American owner won’t be a straightforward business partner.
2. Marcus Thuram (Borussia Mönchengladbach)
A World Cup finalist, Marcus Thuram will undoubtedly be a player to keep an eye on during the January transfer window because his current contract expires in the summer. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s final opportunity to keep him from leaving for free in the summer, when several European clubs expressed interest, is during the winter transfer window. It is said that Inter Milan, among other clubs, will be interested in him again this winter after coming close to signing him in the summer of 2021. Thuram, one of the most intriguing young players in European soccer, participated in five games and recorded two assists during the 2022 World Cup.
1. Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid)

This one will probably be the most intriguing transaction of the winter transfer window. Joao Felix, a Portuguese striker, will look for a new team in the coming weeks after things between him and Diego Simeone, the coach of Atletico de Madrid, got particularly bad recently. Fabrizio Romano, a soccer expert for CBS Sports, claims that Felix is “getting ready to depart from Atletico de Madrid. He’s open to trying something new, so there are opportunities to move in January.”
Jorge Mendes, his agent, is currently trying to find him a new club, but he also has to deal with the Spanish club’s demands, given that he was acquired from Benfica for €126 million in the summer of 2019. This is a name to keep an eye on in the upcoming month.
