Due to cancer advances, Brazil football great Pele will spend the Christmas period in the hospital.
The three-time World Cup champion has been a patient at Sao Paulo’s Israelita Albert Einstein Hospital for the last three weeks.
Pele has had colon cancer since 2021, and in September of that same year, a tumour was removed.
He has been receiving routine care, but a hospital report from Wednesday noted that he requires further attention due to renal and cardiac dysfunctions.

His daughter Kely Nascimento posted on social media that the 82-year-old would be in the hospital throughout the holiday season.
In an Instagram post, she wrote: “Our Christmas at home has been suspended.

“We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it would be better for us to stay here with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us.
“Your love for him, his stories and his prayers are a HUGE comfort because we know we are not alone.”
The hospital’s report stated: “Edson Arantes do Nascimento [Pele] presents a progression of the oncological disease and requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions.
“The patient remains hospitalised in a common room, under the necessary care of the medical team.”
The Brazil side showed their support at the World Cup with banners baring Pele’s image and name after their 4-1 victory over South Korea in Qatar. The Selecao’s journey came to a premature end when they knocked out by Croatia on penalties in the quarter-finals.
