The Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said that the board has always supported Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland (assistant manager).
Mark Bullingham said that FA has already started planning for the Euros tournament, which will take place in 2024.
“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.” Mark Bullingham said, as per BBC Sports.
Gareth Southgate, whose current contract is due to expire in December 2024, first became England’s manager in 2016.
The former defender was England’s caretaker for two months before officially becoming the boss. During Southgate’s reign, England have won six knockout games in major tournaments, which is the same number they won 48 years before he took over.
He led England to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and the finals of last year’s European Championship, which they lost to Italy.
Gareth Southgate has recently faced criticism due to England’s run of poor results before the start of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
The Three Lions surprisingly lost twice to Hungary, drew twice against Germany and then drew and lost to Italy. The results resulted in the Three Lions being relegated to League B of the Nations League.
At the World Cup, England managed to reach the last eight after impressing in the Group stages and the round of 16. Their good run at the tournament came to an end when they lost to France, with Harry Kane missing a crucial penalty in the last minutes of the game.
Immediately after England’s exit, Gareth Southgate asked for some to reflect and decide on the best course of action.
“I think, whenever I finish these tournaments, I’ve needed time to make correct decisions. I want to make the right decision, whatever that is, for the team, for England, for the FA. I’ve got to be sure whatever decision I make is the right one.” Gareth Southgate said.
In the six years Gareth Southgate has been in charge of England, he has built a strong team that is a serious contender for trophies.
The former Middlesborough manager has led England to win 49 out of 81 games. The Three Lions have lost just 14 games in the last six years.
