Martinez made an unbelievable save in the last seconds of added time in extra time to deny France the win. At the penalty shootout, he saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty to put pressure on the remaining France penalty takers.
In the end, it was Argentina who won the penalty shootouts, thanks to Emiliano Martinez’s heroic performance.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper had earlier saved two penalties against Holland to help Argentina proceed to the semi-finals.
Emiliano Martinez is now a World Cup champion, but his early life and football journey have not been easy. He faced challenges, especially at Arsenal, where he had to plead with Mikel Arteta via text, asking to leave.
This was after he was not given any guarantee that he would remain Arsenal’s number-one goalkeeper for the 2020-21 season.

“It was not a poor, poor background, but my family struggled a lot in financial terms. I arrived back in Argentina and, a week after, I had the offer from Arsenal. I saw my brother and mum cry, saying: ‘Please don’t go.’ But I had also seen my dad crying late at night because he could not pay the bills. So I had to be brave at the time, because I said ‘yes’ for them.” He told the Guardian.

Emiliano Martinez biography includes his struggles at Arsenal, a team he joined in 2012 at the age of 20. Before signing a deal with Arsenal, Emi Martinez trained at Independiente’s youth ranks.
He served as an understudy at Arsenal being loaned to various clubs. He was first loaned to Oxford United in 2012, where he made just one appearance before returning to his parent club.
Emi Martinez made his first appearance for Arsenal on September 26, 2012, against Coventry City. Arsenal won the match 6-1. He made his second appearance several days later as Arsenal defeated Reading 7-5.
The Argentine international was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in late 2013 and remained at the club until the end of the 2012-13 season.
He returned to Arsenal and again went on loan to another team, Rotherham United. Emi Martinez joined Wolves on loan at the start of the 2015-16 season.
The goalkeeper returned to Arsenal at the end of the season. After spending the 2016-17 season with the Gunners, he went on loan to Getafe.
Martinez went on loan to Reading before finally leaving Arsenal on September 16, 2022. He signed a deal with Aston Villa and has since been their number one goalkeeper. Martinez is one of Aston Villa’s two vice-captains.
Success With Argentina
The 30-year-old goalkeeper received a call to play for Argentina in June 2011. His second call came against Germany on October 9, 2019.
Emiliano Martinez has since established himself as Argentina’s number one goalkeeper. He played a significant role as the South American side won Copa America in 2021. Due to his impressive performance, he received the Copa America Golden Glove.
Martinez was outstanding in the just-ended World Cup, where he won the Golden Glove as his nation took the big prize.
