The NBA said on Thursday that Los Angeles Lakers guard Patrick Beverley has received a three-game suspension for “forcefully shoving” Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton while the big man wasn’t looking and sent him to the ground during a game on Tuesday.

The ban was justified in a statement from the league, according to executive vice president and director of basketball operations Joe Dumars, as being “based in part on Beverley’s history of unsportsmanlike behavior.”

According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, Beverley would lose $268,965 in compensation as a result of the unpaid suspension.

The Lakers’ back-to-back road games against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday and Saturday, as well as their home game against the Indiana Pacers on Monday, will be missed by Beverley.

Following a flagrant foul by Suns guard Devin Booker, Beverley was called for a technical foul and was also dismissed for charging into Ayton while Ayton was standing over Lakers swingman Austin Reaves. The event happened during the Lakers’ 115-105 loss in Phoenix with 3:55 left in the fourth quarter.

Beverley stated after the game that he was “for sure” worried about the league punishing him for his behavior and that he would take whatever punishment was handed out.

“Very unprofessional by myself. Definitely could have reacted in a different way,” he said. “So, yeah, I’m a big boy. I’ll take my lumps however they come.”

On Thanksgiving afternoon, just before to the ban being made public, Beverley tweeted in a different manner.

The Suns, played without point guard Chris Paul for the seventh straight game, but managed to defeat the Lakers five straight times in regular season play — eight counting the last three games of their 2020-21 playoff series. Anthony Davis had 37 points, 21 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Lakers, playing without LeBron James (left adductor strain) for the fifth straight game. They had won their previous three games without him.

Prior to the incident on Tuesday, Beverley, who was then playing for the Clippers, elbowed Suns guard Chris Paul in the back as the Suns were about to defeat the L.A. Clippers and go to the NBA Finals.

In 14 starts for the Lakers, Beverley is averaging 4.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. His field goal percentage (26.6%) and 3-point percentage (23.8%) shooting are both at career lows.

Beverly is expected to be back for the Lakers on Thursday 1 December when Lakers will take on Portland Trail blazers in the NBA at the Crypto Com Arena.
