Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has had one of the most celebrated careers in football history, but on Sunday he finally earned something that will be remembered less fondly than his many awards: a red card.
Kroos was ejected for the first time as Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona at the Santiago Bernabeu in his 634th competitive top-flight match at the club level.
When the Germany international viciously fouled Aleix Garcia in stoppage time as Girona tried to make a quick escape, he had already received a booking.
Referee Mario Melero Lopez then gave the 32-year-old the order to leave the pitch.

Real Madrid went on to draw the match 1-1 in what was a tough fixture for the La Liga leaders playing with 10 men.
With just over 20 minutes of regular time left, Vinicius Junior’s ninth goal of the year gave Los Blancos the lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Cristhian Stuani scored from the penalty spot in the 80th minute after Marco Asensio was called for a handball after a VAR review, but it was not enough to seal the victory.
Los Blancos had to settle with a result that moved Girona out of the relegation zone while moving them a point above Barcelona at the top of the table after Rodrygo’s late goal was disallowed and Kroos was sent off for a second bookable offense.
At the top of his game, Kroos has played in Germany’s top flight league, the Bundelsiga for Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent his early career on an 18-month loan.

Days after helping his country win the World Cup, Kroos was recruited by Madrid in July 2014. He had previously made his Bundesliga debut in 2007 and had steadily grown into a star performer for Bayern.
In addition to five Club World Cup victories, he has won the Champions League five times, the Bundesliga three times, and LaLiga three times.
With Kroos scoring 59 goals and dishing out 130 assists while expertly directing from midfield, that is merely the tip of the iceberg.
All competitions are included in the 634-game total, which includes 253 LaLiga, 173 Bundesliga, and 132 Champions League games played by Kroos.
Referees weren’t exactly strangers to Kroos around that time, but they had never given him a red card. Before Lopez decided it was time for an early bath, he had accumulated 84 bookings.
