Rwandese side rayon Sports have snapped up Mathare United Captain Judith Atieno, tying her down to a one-season contract. The Kigali-based club made the announcement on Friday, Atieno joining the growing lost of Kenyan players seeking greener pastures outside the country.

She has been a cog in the Mathare side since she joined in 2018 and last season scored 11 goals for them in the league.

“I am glad for the opportunity to join Rayon and I am looking forward to the one season I will be here. I am a striker, I have come here to show what I can do and I will play for the badge,” she said after being unveiled.

“I am looking forward to give my best to the club. I like this team and I want to do what brought me here, play for the badge and be the best for the team and in the team,” she added.

Rayon are looking to build a formidable squad for the new season as they look to wrestle the title and also participate in the qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Shikangwa joins Simba

Meanwhile, strikers Jentrix Shikangwa and defender Ruth Ingotsi most recently joined Simba Queens in Tanzania after short stints in Turkey and Cyprus.

Shikangwa had already quickly settled in well at the club and scored during the weekend 2-0 win over rivals Yanga SC.

Simba Queens have meanwhile arrived in Morocco, ready to roar at the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League. The Tanzanian girls qualified for the Continental showpiece after winning the CECAFA regional qualifiers staged in Dar es Salaam.

Skipper Opah Clement says the team has prepared well and is ready to do their best against the finest from the continent.

“Of course we are delighted to get this opportunity for our first ever Continental Championship. We know the task ahead is huge but as a team we are ready. We will yearn to represent Tanzania and the East African region well and our hope is to get to the knockout stages,” she said.

She added; “We want to thank our management for the support they have given us to prepare in the best way we can and now the work begins for us.”

Charles Lukula, the new head coach, says he is optimistic they will do well.

“We have a good squad and we have prepared well. We have played a number of friendly matches and we know the strengths and weaknesses we had to address. Now we are ready to compete. We promise to do well,” he stated.

In the absence of Shikangwa and Ingotsi, both of who played for Vihiga Queens during the last edition, Simba will rely on another Kenyan, Corazone Aquino, to anchor their ship to success.
