Kenya’s Benson Kipruto wins the 2022 Chicago Marathon

Kenya’s Benson Kipruto won the men’s elite race at the 44th edition of the Chicago Marathon, dubbed the 2022 Bank Of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday evening.

Kipruto, who is the 2021 Boston Marathon Champion won the men’s elite race battling in the last minute of the race, clocking 2:04:24 ahead of Ethiopia’s Seifu Tura, who finished in the second position after clocking 2:04:49.

His win will now mark his family’s two Chicago Marathon victories after his Brother Dickson Chumba won the 2015 Chicago Marathon.

After the race, Kipruto showed his excitement, saying it was a double victory for him, winning the race and recording a new personal best after having entered the marathon with a personal best of 2:05:13 won at 2019 Toronto Marathon.

Tura, on his side, was defending his Chicago Marathon championship after winning the 2021 race. This year’s win would have made him the first athlete to win the Chicago Marathon Championship back-to-back.

John Korir and Bernard Koech of Kenya finished in the third and fourth position, clocking 2:05:01 and 2:07:15, respectively.

Women’s Elite Race

Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich won the women’s elite race at the Chicago Marathon consecutively after clocking two hours, fourteen minutes, and eighteen seconds, a time record regarded as the second fastest marathon record.

USA’s Emily Sission finished in the second position with a time record of two hours, eighteen minutes and twenty-nine seconds, with Kenya’s Vivian Kiplagat finishing in the third position with a time record of two hours, twenty minutes and fifty-two seconds.

Men’s Wheelchair

Marcel Hug won the wheelchair men’s race defeating Daniel Romanchuk, the defending champion, with a marathon record time of one hour, twenty-five minutes and twenty seconds.

Romanchuk finished in the second position clocking one hour thirty-three minutes twelve seconds ahead of United states Aaron Pike. The latter finished in the third position with a time record of one hour, thirty-three minutes and thirteen seconds.

Hug has been battling for years now, but Romanchuk won the race for the last three editions of the Chicago Marathon.
