FKF Premier League champions Tusker FC have signed six new players and promoted one from the Youth Team as they completed their transfer business ahead of the new season.

The club has also signed striker Eric Mmata, defender Tom Teka and Boniface Onyango from Kariobangi Sharks as well as striker Eric Otieno from Wazito FC and goalkeeper Brian Opondo from Bidco United.

Head coach Robert Matano says he is pleased with the transfer activity though he laments one transfer that he did not complete.

Needed one player in midfield

“We really needed one player in midfield but all the same I am happy with the players who have come on board. They showed quality last season and that is why we signed them. It is now up to them to work hard and integrate with the rest of the players and be ready to play,” Matano says.

He added; “Tusker is a top team with a lot of demands and pressure. They should be ready to cope with that and bring results. We are champions and we want to continue being champions.”

Mata will add on to the Tusker attack and brings with him a count of 11 goals and 10 assists from last season. He sparkled in his first season with Sharks, having previously played for Mathare United.

“I am really delighted to join Tusker because this is a top club in the country. I want to keep working hard and ensure that I give my best to keep scoring. My target this season is to score at least 15 goals and hopefully I can battle for the golden boot,” the forward stated.

Defensive reinforcements into the team

Meanwhile, the club has looked at defensive reinforcements, having lost their top defender Christopher Oruchum to Tanzanian side Namungo FC, while they were yet to replace skipper Eugene Asike who left for Sweden mid-season.

The arrival of Teka and Onyango, who can play in both left back and central defense is a huge boost for the side.

“We needed a lot of cover in many departments and I am glad with the quality that comes in. They have to step up because they are big shoes to fill. Even players like Oruchum when they came in, they started from the bottom and picked up,” said the tactician.

Teka, who was a starter for Sharks last season, says he is ready.

“Coming into a team with a lot of competition is great because it improves you as a player and for me, that is what I want. I am ready to give my best and try win a regular starting slot,” Teka, who has previously played for Nzoia Sugar added.

Tusker are meanwhile scheduled to leave for a pre-season training camp in Kericho next Monday as they get ready for the new season.
