Serena Williams’ loss in her last major Grand Slam was the biggest news of the U.S Open 2022 Week 1.

After a heartbreaking loss to Australian player Alja Tomjlanovic at the U.S. Open, Williams’ retirement from tennis started.

She fought valiantly through the first two rounds at New York’s Flushing Meadows but ultimately fell in the third.

Tomjlanovic’s play backed Williams into a corner. It was a tragic finish to an almost 30-year career; she looked like she hadn’t played tennis in ten years.

She finally threw in the towel amid sobs, but celebrity athletes and distinguished leaders congratulated her.

While it was a sad ending for her tennis career, the first week of the last Grand Slam had so much that happened. SportsLeo takes you step by step.

Defending champion Emma Raducanu was eliminated in the first round of the US Open by French player Alize Cornet. It was the first major highlight of the U.S Open 2022 Week 1.

The 19-year-old Raducanu startled the tennis world by qualifying for and ultimately winning a major tournament in 2021. She received widespread media attention.

In New York, the seasoned Cornet defeated the British number one 6-3, 6-3. While Raducanu tried her best, she couldn’t equal Cornet’s effort and tenacity.

She said it hurts a little because this is her favourite event, and she’s had a lot of highs and lows this past year.

Italian player Matteo Berrettini put an end to Andy Murray’s brief comeback in the third round of the tournament. Berrettini defeated Murray in four straight sets.

Murray said his game is getting better, adding his delight in the fact that he came so close to beating the finalist from the previous year’s Wimbledon tournament.

NAOMI OSAKA LOST TO DANIELLE COLLINS

Naomi Osaka’s comeback attempt at the 2022 US Open hit a snag in the first round by a loss to Danielle Collins in straight sets. It was the most intriguing U.S Open 2022 week 1 match.

The 27-year-old American won the match against Osaka 7-6, 6-3, despite losing all three sets in their previous meetings. The late match at Arthur Ashe Stadium didn’t begin until 11 p.m. and went on until nearly 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Osaka, who is presently unseeded after a difficult year of injuries, had won the U.S. Open in 2018 and 2020. She held a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the high-quality match, which featured superb strokes from both players.

Collins seeded 19th, promptly replied and evened the score at 3-3. She served nine double faults, but the match remained close until the end when Collins finally prevailed.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV LOST TO NICK KYRGIOS

On Sunday, Nick Kyrgios advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals with a 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over world No.1 Daniil Medvedev.

He effectively ended Medvedev’s hopes of defending his championship. The feisty Australian emerged on top in a matchup between two of the game’s biggest servers and most combustible personalities.

He displayed renewed focus and fitness in a match fit for a Broadway musical. It was the unexpected turnout of two tennis heavyweights in U.S Open 2021 week 1.

LEYLAH FERNANDEZ LOST TO LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA

Liudmila Samsonova eliminated Leylah Fernandez from the US Open in the second round with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory.

After missing most of the summer due to a stress fracture in her right foot, Fernandez had hoped to make a good run. It didn’t happen, despite playing in the Grand Slam finals in 2021 with Emma Raducanu.

With the final Grand Slam tournament of the year upon us, speculations about the 2022 US Open prize pool flooded the internet.

The US Open will award $60 million in prizes to answer it. The 2021 event prize of USD 57.5 million was the largest of the four Grand Slams; therefore, this amount is significantly higher.

The sum of money given to winners has also grown. Singles champions in the men’s and women’s divisions will each receive $2.6 million, while the men’s champion will receive $2.5 million. As of 2021, this is an increase.

New York City is hosting the year’s last and most prestigious competition. When compared to the previous three Grand Slams, this one isn’t dominated by a single player.

Therefore, it offers a more exciting show for the audience to enjoy. It ends on September 11, when we will all know who is the winner in each category.
