2022 BMW Berlin Marathon; All you need to know

  • This year’s event will mark the 48th edition of the Berlin Marathon since the first edition of the marathon was held in 1974.

  • Eliud Kipchoge is one of the biggest names on the list of elite runners participating in the 2022 BMW Berlin Marathon.

The BMW Berlin Marathon is set to be held this Sunday 25th September with up to 4500 athletes from 150 nations across the world lining up for undisputed records on the streets of Berlin, Germany.

This year’s event will mark the 48th edition of the Berlin Marathon since the first edition of the marathon was held in 1974. The marathon has since been held annually on the last weekend of September covering up to 42km.

However, the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic.

Who is eligible to participate

The 2022 BMW BERLIN-MARATHON has been categorized according to international competition regulations (IWB) of the German Athletics Federation (DLV).

The eligibility for participation requires that all participants be 18 (age group 2004).

All participants in different races are required to complete the course within the time limit of 6:15 hours with Walkers allowed but should stay within the given time limit.

The only Sports equipment allowed at the event is Hand bikes and race wheelchairs.

Registration

Berlin Marathon registration is usually done via lottery and one can enter the lottery as an individual runner or as a team of either two or three people.

The fee registration fee per person is 150 €, slightly higher than it has been previously a move that Organizers have explained as a way of improving the quality of the services offered during the event.

Who are the 2022 Berlin Marathon Main Sponsors

Like any event, Berlin Marathon is a sponsored event with Adidas and Abbott being their main sponsors and BMW as their title sponsor.

BMW a Munich, Bavaria, Germany-based multinational manufacturer of luxury vehicles and motorcycles has been Berlin’s Marathon title sponsor since 2011.

At this year’s event, BMW has sponsored 50 vehicles and 15 C evolution class scooters which will be part of the fleet of support vehicles for the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON

Other Co-Sponsors include WANDA Sports and ERDINGER.

Race Course

The Marathon race starts at the “Kleiner Stern” with athletes occupying both lanes of the boulevard “Strasse des 17 Juni.”

It then goes around the Tiergarten area, passing by the Reichchstag just before turning to the old East Berlin and the neighbourhoods.

It then runs across Kurfurstendamm after Potsdamer Platz, along the Unter den Linden before taking a course in the Brandenburg.

The finishing end is on the boulevard “Strasse des 17 Juni in front of the Soviet monument.

Finishers

Berlin Marathon has seen over 40,000 finishers.

Starting time

The marathon will be held in different waves with the Hand biker for the Elite race starting at 08:50 am.

The wheelchair and Hand biker competition will start at 08:57 a.m.

Runners have been scheduled from 09:15 a.m. though in different waves.

Elite runners competing

Eliud Kipchoge is one of the biggest names on the list of elite runners participating in the 2022 BMW Berlin Marathon.

Kipchoge won the 2018 Berlin Marathon clocking 2:01:39 which is still his personal best and hell is competing to break his own record.

Ethiopia’s Guye Adola who holds a personal best of 2:03:46 in a marathon race will also be making his primary entry at the Berlin Marathon.

Keira d’Amato, The American marathon record holder with a personal best of 2:19:12 will be among the athletes gracing the women’s competitions with her compatriot Sara Hall who holds a personal best of 2:20:32.

They both finished in the top 10 list of the World Athletics Championships marathon.

Kenya’s Nancy Jelagat Meto with a personal best of 2:19:31 will also be in the women’s race competition.

She finished in the second position in last year’s Berlin Marathon.

Award Ceremony

The award ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at. 11:45 after the finish of the third woman’s at Straße des 17. Juni.

Berlin Marathon is among the six major marathons in the world.
