Since 1930, Argentina has competed in a total of 18 finals competitions for the World Cup. They were victorious in both the 1978 and 1986 iterations of the competition, the latter of which was helped along to victory by Diego Maradona.
The 2014 championship game they played in but ultimately lost to Germany was the game in which they came the furthest towards winning the trophy in recent memory.
The Azzurri are historically one of the most successful teams to represent Europe throughout the competition. However, they did not qualify for this year’s tournament.
Their chances of advancing to the finals in Qatar were dashed when they were knocked out in the semifinals by a lesser team, North Macedonia, which they played at home.
Since the beginning of the competition 92 years ago, Italy has participated an astounding 18 times. The Azzurri have been victorious in this competition on four separate occasions, claiming victory in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006 respectively.
They were the first team in the history of the World Cup to successfully defend its championship. Italy has won consecutive tournaments in 1934 and 1938.
They are the only team in tournament history, along with Brazil, to have won the title in back-to-back years.
