2010: Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling was the most expensive Manchester United signing in 2010. Smalling joined Manchester United from Fulham. 

The Red Devils agreed with Fulham on Smalling’s transfer in January 2010. However, the legendary defender remained at Craven Cottage until the summer transfer window was opened. He joined the Red Devils for around 12 million euros.

2011: David de Gea

David de Gea was the most expensive signing Manchester United made during the 2011 summer transfer window. The Spanish goalkeeper joined The Red Devils from Atletico Madrid for 22 million euros. 

De Gea was 21 years old when he first arrived in Manchester. He was under pressure to prove himself as a perfect replacement for Edwin van der Sar. De Gea had a shaky start at Manchester United but later impressed the fans with his amazing saves. 

2012: Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie was the most expensive signing made by The Red Devils in the summer of 2012. The former Arsenal man joined Manchester United for 22.5 million euros. 

Robin van Persie joined Manchester United to help the team win their 20th Premier League title. The Dutchman achieved his target in his first season as he led the team to win the title by scoring 26 goals. 

2013: Marouane Fellaini

During his days with Everton, Marouane Fellaini was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The midfield maestro was Manchester United’s most expensive signing in 2013. 

Marouane Fellaini joined Manchester United from Everton for around 28 million euros. He left Old Trafford in 2019 and is currently playing for Shandong Luneng Taishan. 

2014: Angel Di Maria

Angel Di Maria recently joined Juventus from Paris Saint-Germain. The former Manchester United man joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid for around 59.7 million euros. 

Despite the huge amount paid for Di Maria’s transfer, things never worked out for the Argentine at Old Trafford. Di Maria left Manchester United after just one season in England. 

2015: Anthony Martial 

Anthony Martial joined Manchester United for an initial fee of 36 million euros which rose to 58 million euros. The Frenchman was ranked among the best youngsters in the world while playing for Monaco. 

However, in recent years, he has failed to establish himself as a top player. Martial has scored one league goal in the past 18 months. His good form in the pre-season friendlies could boost his performance next season. 

2016: Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders of his generation. The Frenchman is an academy graduate of Manchester United. 

Pogba joined Juventus as a free agent before returning to Manchester United as one of the club’s most expensive signings for 89 million euros. 

2017: Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has had a rollercoaster career. The Belgian international joined Manchester United as the most expensive signing in 2017. 

He scored 42 goals before leaving for Inter Milan. He spent last season at Chelsea and is currently back at Inter Milan. 

2018: Fred

Football fans could argue that 52 million euros was a lot of money to pay for Fred. However, he has recently improved and could prove his worth next season. 

2019: Harry Maguire

Maguire is yet to prove that he is worth the amount paid to Leicester City for his transfer.
