  • Lina Nielsen had kept the news of battling multiple sclerosis a secret from the public, and only a select few knew about her condition.
  • The condition attacked his lead left leg where she started feeling numb and weak.
  • Lina Neilsen’s twin sister Laviai developed the same condition in 2021 two days before heading for Tokyo Olympics.

Lina Nielsen has admitted battling a relapse of multiple sclerosis symptoms on the eve of her heat in Oregon.

Earlier this month the British 400m hurdler speaking to local media outlets in the United Kingdom said that doctors found her with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, the most common form of the condition in her teenage years.

Admittedly she was busy with the summer training and she didn’t expect such a condition could recur right before her first Championships of the summer something she says was bad timing.

Clarifying the condition, the 26-year-old speaking to Sky Sports said she started feeling weak and numb something that made it difficult for her in training and going into the competition, although she admits to having enjoyed it.

Before going public Nielsen had only kept the multiple sclerosis diagnosis news to family and friends and small members of her teammates.

It was a condition that she didn’t expect to come up at such a crucial time in her career, having managed to put up with it for five years without flare-ups and relapses.

“I just managed accordingly, I reduced the intensity of training, I just adapt really. I don’t want to stop sport, I just make sure I listen to the body and really respect it.” She said to Sky sports.

Nielsen came out to speak about the condition after missing out on the semi-finals of a World Championship she had entered on the back of a personal best in the Diamond League in June.

On the backdrop of that, the British 400m hurdler came last in the first round of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

She says despite being hopeful she could win in the race unfortunately in the build-up, she failed to feel her left leg lead going over the hurdle during the run and that necessitated her position.

“I just remember telling myself ‘you’ve run this race so many times before in your career, just do exactly as you’ve always done,” Nielsen added.

Lina Neilsen’s twin sister Laviai in 2021 developed the same condition two days before flying to Tokyo Olympics.
