Early Life
David de Gea was born in Madrid, Spain, on November 7, 1990. The Spanish international grew up in Illescas, where he began playing football. He showed great goalkeeping skills as a young player in the neighbourhood.
De Gea joined Atletico Madrid at age 13 when his coach Juan Luis Martin lied to the La Liga club that Rayo Vallecano were almost signing him.
The goalkeeper showed his ability at Atletico Madrid’s academy and quickly rose through the club’s youth ranks. He signed his first professional contract as a player in 2008 at 17.
Atletico Madrid Sporting Director, Jesus Garcia, punished De Gea in 2009 by forcing him to train by himself after he rejected a move to Numancia.
Atletico Madrid coach Abel Resino spotted de Gea training alone and invited him to train with the first team. He was included in the squad as a third-choice goalkeeper.
Career
David de Gea made his debut as a first-team Atletico Madrid player on September 30, 2009, coming on as a substitute. He conceded two goals, and Atletico Madrid lost the UEFA Champions League match 2-0 to FC Porto.
