Samuel Eto’o’s records that are yet to be broken

Samuel Eto’o was an energetic forward known for his speed, good technique, accurate finishing with his head and feet, and stamina. During his early career days, Eto’o mainly played as a central striker. However, he showed he could play in other attacking positions during his time at Inter Milan.

Eto’o is one of the most decorated football players of all time. The legendary striker won numerous trophies with the top European teams he played for. Some of the top teams Samuel Eto’o played for are Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Everton. 

The African star is among the few players who have won the African Cup of Nations back to back. Eto’o first won the AFCON in 2000, then in 2002 while representing his national team, Cameroon. 

Samuel Eto’o is the fourth player in UEFA Champions League history to win the prestigious trophy two years in a row with different teams. He won the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona in 2009 and Inter Milan in 2010. Eto’o is the second player in history to score in two UEFA Champions League finals. 

Well, there are three records by Samuel Eto’o that have not yet been broken.

1. RCD Mallorca all-time top goalscorer

Samuel Eto’o is in the history book of RCD Mallorca as their all-time top goalscorer. The African star scored a total of 54 goals for the Spanish club. 

Samuel Eto’o first played for Mallorca on loan from Real Madrid in January 2000. He made 19 appearances scoring six goals before the end of the 2000-01 season. His impressive performance convinced Mallorca to permanently sign him from Real Madrid in the summer of 2000. 

Eto’o got the attention of football fans during his time with Mallorca. He helped the La Liga club win the Copa del Rey during the 2002-03 season. Eto’o scored two goals in the final of the Copa del Rey as Mallorca beat Recreativo de Huelva 3-0. 

Samuel Eto’o left Mallorca in the summer of 2004 as their all-time top scorer with 54 goals. The second all-time leading scorer for Mallorca is Juan Arango, who scored 46 goals during his time with the Spanish club.

2. Cameroon’s all-time top goalscorer

Samuel Eto’o is undoubtedly the greatest Cameroonian footballer of all time. The legendary striker made 118 appearances for Cameroon. Eto’o is Cameroon’s all-time goalscorer with 56 goals. 

A young Samuel Eto’o made his first appearance for the Cameroon national team in 1997 when he was just 15. He was the youngest player at the 1998 FIFA World Cup; he was 17 years and three months old. 

Eto’o was a very crucial player for Cameroon in international competitions. His goalscoring ability helped Cameroon with the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Eto’o also helped Cameroon win the 2000 Summer Olympic games. 

Samuel Eto’o retired from international football in 2014 as Cameroon’s all-time leading goalscorer with 56 goals. The second top scorer for Cameroon is Roger Milla, who scored 43 goals between 1973 and 1994. 

Eto’o is the second most capped player for Cameroon with 118 appearances. Rigobert Song is the most capped Cameroonian player with 137 appearances. 

3. Africa Cup of Nations all-time top goalscorer

Samuel Eto’o participated in six Africa Cup of Nations before he retired from international football in August 2014. The Cameroonian star is in history as the all-time top goalscorer for the Africa Cup of Nations with 18 goals. 

Eto’o made his first AFCON appearance in 2000 and helped Cameroon win the tournament. He was also part of Cameroon’s squad that won the tournament in 2002. The legendary striker later appeared in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 AFCON tournaments. 

Eto’o made 29 appearances at the AFCON tournaments scoring 18 goals. The second highest top scorer at the AFCON tournaments is Laurent Pokou of Ivory Coast. Laurent scored 14 goals in the AFCON tournament between 1968 and 1980. He made just 12 appearances in the competition and a goalscoring ratio of 1.17 goals per match.
