Popovich is the president and head coach of the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States. He is an American by birth, born on January 28 1949.

He is the highest-paid NBA coach, taking home $11 million yearly. His annual salary is $1 million, and he is not about to let it go 24 years later into coaching.

He received his high school education from Merrillville High School. He went on to earn his degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1970. At the academy, he participated in basketball all four years.

He captained the team in his final year and earned the status of the squad’s highest scorer. He completed his undergraduate degree in Soviet Studies and intelligence training with the Air Force.

Later on, he attended the University of Denver and received his master’s degree in physical education and sports sciences. Popovich entertained the idea of working for the Central Intelligence Agency at one point in his life.

He joined the United States Armed Forces Basketball Team during the mandatory five years of active duty with the United States Air Force. He captained the team in 1972 and won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) title.

WHEN DID GREGG POPOVICH START COACHING?

After leaving the Air Force Academy in 1970, Popovich returned in 1973 to serve as an assistant coach for six years under Hank Egan. Subsequently, Egan joined Popovich’s staff as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs.

While on the coaching staff at the United States Air Force Academy, Popovich received a master’s degree in physical education and sports sciences from the University of Denver. At Pomona-Pitzer, he led the men’s basketball team as its head coach in 1979.

Until 1988, Pomona-Pitzer men’s basketball team won its first outright championship in 68 years under his watch.

WHERE IS GREGG POPOVICH COACHING NOW?

He is still coaching San Antonio Spurs –more than 24 years later, further fuelling Gregg Popovich retire debate. But here is what you need to know about how it all started.

Popovich was hired by Spurs head coach Mike Brown to serve as the team’s primary assistant coach between 1988 and 1992. In 1992, he made a temporary move to the Golden State Warriors, where he worked as an assistant coach under Don Nelson. The latter would later be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

After Peter Holt purchased the franchise in 1994, Popovich made his way back to San Antonio to take over the role of general manager and vice president of basketball operations for the Spurs.

On December 10, 1996, Popovich sacked head coach Bob Hill after the Spurs got off to a 3–15 start in the 1996–97 season. At the same time, David Robinson was sidelined with a preseason back ailment.

Popovich then took over as head coach of the Spurs and has remained so ever since.
