  • Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time
  • He adjusted well and is even looking forward to spending more time with his family
  • He loves being at home and being with his family when it matters most

Roger Federer, the greatest tennis player of all time, says he is glad with the small things” while he is at home.

This admission is one of the clearest evidence yet that Federer is prepared for life beyond tennis.

Due to the ongoing issues with his knee, the 20-time Grand Slam champion has not competed in a tennis match in more than a year. His last feature was at Wimbledon in 2021, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

After the grass-court Grand Slam, he underwent a third operation on his knee. He indicated at the beginning of this year that he intends to return to competition in the summer of 2022, and the Laver Cup in September is likely to be his first event after his comeback.

The 40-year-old tennis player has adjusted well and is even looking forward to spending more time with his family and friends once he hangs up his racket. This is in contrast to the majority of tennis players, who would fear being away from the circuit for such a long period of time.

According to an article published in the Algemeen Dagblad and translated by Tennis Majors, Federer spoke of his tennis career post-injury.

He said that he loves to win, but if you’re not competitive any more, then it’s better to stop. He realized that he is happy in small things. Federer doesn’t believe that he requires tennis to be happy.

He finds joy in the smallest accomplishments, such as when his child completes a task successfully or when she reports that she has received a good grade at school. Nevertheless, tennis is a big part of who he is, but it’s not all of who I am.

The Swiss says he gives a lot of energy into business, possibly more than he should at times. He is happy that this is something doable outside of athletics as well.  All he wants is to be successful and stay successful which is why he puts a lot of energy into it.

He adds that he is aware that one’s professional career cannot go on indefinitely, and he made peace with this fact.

HOW DOES ROGER FEDERER SPEND HIS TIME OFF THE COURT?

Given that Roger Federer had so much spare time over the past year, what exactly did he do? He says that it was a moment unlike any other in his tennis career.

It offered him the ability to selectively sift out his travels and give something back. Moreover, it was a great way to reintegrate with the community and give back post-recovery.

He recalls that many people always went to see him, but it was his turn to do the same to those in need. Federer adds that being off the tour gave him an opportunity to be with his kids.

While they miss travelling with him to some of his games, he feels relaxed because the tennis itinerary is gruelling.

“The tennis itinerary was sometimes excessive, especially with having to organise that for the children too. It’s nice to have a break from that now, and for them too, although they miss the travelling.”

He plainly admits that being at home gives him a lot of joy. The 40-year-old says they have friends in different countries, and we have established rituals for each of them as well.

But, his family hasn’t had the chance to catch up with their pals in New York and Melbourne in quite some time. However, his home life brings him a great deal of joy.

“But I can honestly say that I am very happy at home. And that it is a great advantage that I can now make an appointment for a Tuesday morning in three weeks. And that I can actually do it without reality overtaking me.

At times we miss travelling the world, and of course, I also miss the sport, but also feel: life at home in a, let’s say, normal way, is also good,” he states.

His recent appearance at Wimbledon 2022 as a guest gave his fans a taste of how it feels having him play tennis actively.
