  • The financial muscles of the Red Devils have enabled them to sign some of the best players in the world.
  • Paul Pogba, who has left Manchester United this summer, is the most expensive player in the history of the club.

Manchester United is one of the top English Premier League clubs. The Red Devils have been the biggest club in English football for the last four decades. However, things have recently not been going fine with them since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The club has used their financial power to sign big names in the football world. They also pay vast amounts of money to their players as wages.

This article will focus on the top five most expensive Manchester United signings.

1. Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba is currently a free agent after leaving Manchester United this summer. He is expected to sign for Juventus any moment before the summer transfer window is closed.

Well, Paul Pogba is one of the best midfield players in the football world. It is not a surprise that Manchester United signed the Frenchman for 94.5 million Euros in 2016. He was signed from Juventus in the summer of 2016.

However, Paul Pogba faced criticism from Manchester United fans due to his inconsistent form. Injuries affected his performance with the Red Devils. He was not always there when the club needed him the most.

2. Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire was one of the best defenders in the English Premier League during his time with Leicester City. Manchester United were struggling at defense when they decided to sign Harry Maguire. The Englishman was signed for 80 million Euros.

Harry Maguire is the most expensive defender in history. It took him just half a season before being named the captain of the Red Devils. The Manchester United fans hoped that Maguire would solve their defensive woes.

However, things have not been the same with Harry Maguire at Manchester United. The Englishman has faced much criticism from the Manchester United fans due to his consistently poor form. Maguire has failed to impress under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Ranginik.

It is so unfortunate that things have not worked out well for the second most expensive Manchester United signing of all time.

3. Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho was rated amongst the best wingers in the world during his time with Borussia Dortmund. Manchester United tried signing him for some time before it finally worked out in the summer of 2021.

The Englishman was signed from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of 76.5 million Euros. He is the third most expensive signing in the history of Manchester United.

Jadon Sancho struggled to impress during his first games with the English Premier League giants. However, he seemed to have gained momentum after scoring against Chelsea. The season ended when Sancho had started impressing the fans at Old Trafford.

4. Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku is a big name in the football world. The Belgian star has played in the English Premier League for Everton, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Lukaku joined Manchester United in the summer of 2017 after a series of excellent seasons at Everton. The Red Devils paid 76.2 million Euros to Everton for Lukaku to be a Manchester United player.

Big Rom played two seasons at Manchester United, then joined Inter Milan. He is among the players who have been criticized by football fans worldwide. Lukaku played for Chelsea last season but is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

5. Angel Di Maria

Angel Di Maria is one of the best wingers in the football world. Manchester United signed the Argentine in 2014 after reaching the World Cup final with Argentina. He was one of Argentina’s key players during the tournament, and it is not a surprise Manchester United made him their most expensive player in 2014.

The Red Devils spent 67.5 million on Angel Di Maria. He wore the No.7 on his back, and many fans expected him to deliver.

Di Maria started well with three goals and four assists in his first six games for the Red Devils. However, things didn’t go well with Di Maria as he left the club after just 12 months. Manchester United fans described Di Maria as a flop because he didn’t impress as expected.

Di Maria moved to Paris Saint Germain, and his wife labelled Manchester United a “s***hole”, something which the Red Devils fans didn’t appreciate.
