Wazito boss Ambani confident his side will not suffer relegation

Wazito FC in their match against City Stars

  • They remain second from bottom with four points away from the play-off zone
  • There are four rounds of matches left before the season ends

Wazito FC are staring at the possibility of suffering relegation at the end of the season, as they remain second from bottom in the FKF Premier League standings with four rounds of matches left to play.

Wazito lost their fourth match in six outings when they went down by a solitary goal to Nairobi City Stars, putting their survival chances further complicated.

But, head coach Fred Ambani wears a brave face that his charges have what it takes to turn their season around, though he says they have been hurt by biased officiating.

“I have a very good team with a lot of quality and I assure everyone that if the officiating is okay, we will not be relegated at the end of the season. We are playing well but some decisions always come up against us at crucial moments,” said the tactician.

He was particularly annoyed with the penalty decision that led to the solo goal against City Stars, which Ezekiel Odera put away to hand City Stars the win.

“That decision changed the whole game because it was at a very crucial time. There was absolutely no penalty at all and I am really disappointed with the decision. But we will keep fighting and we will keep working. I promise Kenyans we will not be relegated,” he said.

Against City Stars, Wazito had the chances in the opening half, first Tyson Otieno finding acres of space on the left after being played through by Elli Asieche but his shot was weak and an easy gather for the keeper.

In the 24th minute, Otieno was fouled after a good drive from deep to the edge of the box, but Curtis Wekesa’s effort from the freekick flew over the bar.

They had an even better chance on the break in the 44th minute when Asieche played Otieno through on the right with a through ball but his low effort was saved by Curtis Osano. The rebound fell on Asieche whose shot flew over the bar.

In the second half, City Stars came back faster off the blocks and were given a penalty in the 57th minute when Timothy Ouma came down after battling for an aerial ball with Dennis Nandwa.

Despite protests from Wazito players, Odera stepped up to score and give his side the lead.

Wazito upped their game after going down and Osano pulled off another great save, flying to his right to push away Curtis Wekesa’s shot on the volley after being flicked through by Michael ‘Wise’ Owino.

In the 73rd minute they were denied by the upright when Rooney Onyango curled in a well taken freekick from the right.

At the death, City Stars were almost gifted a second penalty when the referee adjudged keeper Zamu Adisa to have fouled Rodgers Okumu as he raced to a through ball inside the box. But, in a twist, the referee pointed to a freekick at the edge of the box, which Timothy Ouma curled over.
