  • Newcastle have reportedly scrapped any plans for a summer transfer due to Lingard’s high wage demands
  • He is demanding more than £150,000 per week plus a large signing-on fee which would make him the highest-paid player at St. James’ Park
  • Lingard has only made eight Premier League appearances under Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford in 2022

Newcastle United appear set to end any hopes of signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United this summer after withdrawing from the race due to his high wage demands.

The Magpies wanted the 29-year-old on loan until the end of the season during the January transfer window, but Eddie Howe’s side was unwilling to pay the £16 million loan fee demanded by the Red Devils.

Lingard’s contract with Manchester United expires at the end of the season. Still, Newcastle has reportedly scrapped any plans for a summer transfer due to the player’s high wage demands not fitting into their financial structure.

According to sources, Newcastle will refuse to sign Lingard because the England international is demanding more than £150,000 per week plus a large signing-on fee.

This would make him the highest-paid player at St. James’ Park, which the club is opposed to for someone who will turn 30 at the end of the season.

Furthermore, the attacking midfielder has only made eight Premier League appearances under Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford in 2022. With most of those coming off the bench, making the Magpies less likely to offer him such a lucrative deal to move north.

Things might have been different if he had joined on loan in January and had a successful spell on Tyneside.

Newcastle is also keen to reduce the average age of their current squad.

Having signed experienced professionals Kieran Trippier (31), Chris Wood (30), and Dan Burn (30) earlier this year to help them in their fight for survival, which they have now achieved. Lingard (29), on the other hand, would only add to that.

Lingard was rumoured to be interested in a move to the northeast in January, so it’s a shame he prefers to remain stubborn over his wage demands rather than match that same mentality he displayed at the start of the year.

The Manchester United player could thrive at the club under Howe.

He had an incredibly successful loan spell at West Ham United under David Moyes last season.

He scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 games as the Hammers finished sixth in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa League.

Howe wants to sign another wide forward before the beginning of next season and has been keen to strike a deal to bring the England international to St. James’ Park.

Still, the midfielder appears to have priced himself out of a move to the club, meaning he will have to look elsewhere.

With Newcastle looking to introduce a transfer policy that includes signing younger players and working to develop them for the future.

It is likely that they will target someone younger than Lingard, and with the money they have available, a marquee signing is possible.

However, the club’s hierarchy remains committed to offloading some players this summer, with plans to axe up to ten members of the first-team squad to help clear their wage bill and provide some extra funds to help secure top signings.

Members of their squad on the fringes, such as Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, and others, will be able to leave if they find another club and are expected to be transferred listed at the end of the season.
