According to sources, Wayne Rooney reportedly turned down the chance to join Eric Ten Hag’s backstage team at Manchester United to focus on his coaching duties at Derby County.

The Red Devils are likely to choose Ten Hag as their permanent manager before the start of next season, and the Dutchman is thought to want at least one former United player on his coaching staff when he arrives at Old Trafford.

In recent days, Robin van Persie, who currently works as a coach at Feyenoord, has been heavily connected with a return to United to assist Ten Hague in his new post.

According to Stretty News, Rooney was identified as one of many possibilities for the post of assistant coach before dismissing his old employers and staying in charge of Derby till the end of the season.

According to the source, Rooney was the candidate who sparked United’s interest the most.

Still, he insisted during early conversations that he wanted to stay in Derby, which seems poised to be relegated to League One despite gaining points this season.

Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are also alleged to have approached United but passed down the chance to rejoin for various reasons.

As a result of the situation, Van Persie is the leading candidate for the post, with  Erik Ten Hag hopeful that United will sign a former player before the summer.

As part of any contract to join Ten Hag at United next season, Van Persie might request that his son, Shaqueel, be signed to the club’s academy.

It’s unclear whether United will appoint Van Persie in the coming months or whether the club’s hierarchy will choose a different path following their first-round loss to Rooney.

The Dutchman has previously stated that his coaching style focuses on helping young players reach their full potential.

This implies that being the first to be enticed to join his club at Old Trafford may benefit Ten Hag, who has a track record of the same.

“I was a creative player, and I never liked a coach telling me what to do just because I wanted my freedom.

“so now what I’m trying to do is have two parts to my coaching style,” Van Persie told The Star a. a year ago when asked about his approach to his coaching career.
