  • The relegation battle is between Nzoia Sugar, Wazito, Vihiga and Mathare

The status quo on top of the FKF Premier League standings remained after all top four sides picked draws in their matches this weekend.

Leaders Kakamega Homeboyz were held to a 1-1 draw by Sofapaka at the Kasarani Annex yesterday while second placed Tusker played to a controversial 0-0 stalemate with Gor Mahia on Saturday.

Meanwhile, third placed Nairobi City Stars also split points, after being held to a 0-0 draw by Ulinzi Stars at the Ruaraka Complex yesterday.

At the Kasarani Annex on Sunday, Homeboyz were looking to go at least 12 points clear after Tusker’s result the previous day but were denied by a Joe Waithira goal 10 minutes to time.

They had gone ahead through the on-form David Okoth, but their hunt for maximum points couldn’t travel the entire distance.

At the Ruaraka Complex, Nairobi City Stars played to a goalless stalemate with Ulinzi, who were determined to bounce back after a disastrous outing in Kakamega last weekend saw them lose 4-0 to Homeboyz.

Both sides had chances with James Saruni making two good saves in either half, He did well to ounch away a rasping shot from Oliver Maloba with John Kamau placing the rebound wide while in the second half, he was astute to pick up a freekick from Timothy Ouma.

For the military side, their best chance of the game was in the first half when Masita Masuta drove a rasping shot from the right but it rose inches over the bar while in the second half, Clinton Omondi had a shot collected by the keeper.

“I believe for us those were two points dropped because we just didn’t play our game at all. We couldn’t pass the ball well and neither did we create much. But we take the point in our stride and strive to do better next time,” said City Stars coach Nicholas Muyoti.

He added; “I believe we are still in the race for the title because with nine matches to go, anything can happen so we will keep pushing.”

Meanwhile, Ulinzi’s Benjamin Nyangweso was elated with the point especially coming after his side were drubbed 4-0 by Kakamega Homeboyz last weekend.

“It was a great improvement from us and we played very well. Our problem remains the scoring bit because we dominate games so well but when it comes to scoring, we just can’t put the ball in the net. We will work on this and strive to finish well in the remainder of the season,” said the tactician.

In other matches, Nigerian import Ojo Olaniyi scored at the death as AFC Leopards came from behind to beat Wazito 2-1. James Kinyanjui had given Wazito a 17th minute lead, but John Mark Makwatta scored the leveller in the 32nd minute.

It was another impressive victory for Ingwe who have been playing well over the last few matches, going for 10 matches without defeat.

“We had to change our strategy in the second half because the pitch couldn’t allow us play our usual game of passing the ball around. I am happy with the players once again and we move up slowly by slowly,” said head coach Patrick Aussems.

At the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma, keeper Mike Wanyika put up a man of the match performance, saving a last minute penalty as Bandari beat the home side 2-1 to move fifth in the standings with 40 points.
