Can Homeboyz complete the FKF Premier League title dream?

Homeboyz celebrate a win in a past match
  • Homeboyz are 10 points clear on top of the standings
  • With five wins in their next six matches they will have the title wrapped
  • They have never won the FKF PL title before

Kakamega Homeboyz are six wins away from clinching their first ever FKF Premier League title, and head coach Bernard Mwalala has reiterated that they will not relent on their search with 10 rounds of matches left to play.

Homeboyz hold a 10-point lead to second placed Tusker FC with 10 rounds of matches left and they are now, more than ever, determined to go all the way and clinch the title.

They have been on great form this season, losing only once in 24 outings and they believe they have what it takes to go all the way.

“Over the years, it has always been about Gor Mahia and Tusker FC winning the Kenyan Premier League. But it has been our ambition as a team from the start of the season that we can actually do this and battle for the league title,” Mwalala said.

“We want to break that Nairobi dominance and give our people in Western at least something to smile about. The players, technical bench and management are all working towards the same goal,” Mwalala further affirmed.

Homeboyz have a manageable list of fixtures in their last 10 outings and they start off this weekend with a bout on the road against a rather wobbly Sofapaka side at the Kasarani Annex.

Their 4-0 thrashing of Ulinzi Stars last weekend has pumped some confidence into their nerves and they will be looking to impress more against a wobbly Batoto ba Mungu.

A win on the road, and if Tusker falters at the hands of Gor Mahia on Saturday will put champagne on ice for Mwalala and his men.

After Sofapaka, Homeboyz play Police FC in Nairobi and Wazito FC at home, before facing a huge tie against Tusker FC at their Ruaraka backyard. A win in these next three vital matches will put them firmly on the driver’s seat to clinching the league title.

Meanwhile, KCB still retain title hopes despite dropping all the way down to sixth following back to back draws against holders Tusker FC. The bankers who finished second last season are on 38 points, 14 off the leaders, but have vowed to keep fighting for the title.

The club’s top scorer Derrick Otanga says he is determined to score goals and help his team charge up to battle for the title.

“Scoring is key for us but now we have some confidence after losing our way some bit. At least now we have targets as players and in football anything can happen. It is not out of our sight and we have to push and see what we can achieve at the end of the season,” said the striker.

The bankers will take on Kariobangi Sharks at the Kasarani Annex on Saturday and will also look to keep their scoring touch on, hoping that the team’s above them falter to give them a chance to push higher up the standings.

The bankers have only won once in their last five matches and head coach Zedekiah Otieno is keen to put this trend to a rest. Sharks meanwhile picked their first win in five last weekend and are also keen to push up the standings.
