Upon their return to the Kenya Cup following one season in the Championship, Strathmore beat Mwamba RFC in Kenya Cup. They continued with their strong start to the season after picking a second consecutive win with a 38-18 victory over seasoned Mwamba RFC at the Impala Ground on Saturday.
The University side rallied from 13-12 at halftime to pick the second successive victory, having started their Kenya Cup campaign with a 30-11 win over another season side, Nakuru RFC, in Nairobi last weekend.
Leos, as they are fondly referred as, are coached by former Mwamba tactician Louis Kisia.
The coach said he was impressed with how his team has started the season and believes they are on the right path.
“I am really pleased with how we have started the season. We have been playing well and the two victories are deserved,” said Kisia.
Looking back to the win against Mwamba, his former team, Kisia was excited as well. “We were very good on the scrums and breakdown and used our chances well. We have been playing very well according to our system and the players have stuck to instruction. Also, there has been a lot of self belef,” said the coach.
Strathmore ran in four tries, three of which were converted and also added on four penalties to clinch a bonus-point win in Nairobi.
Fresh from picking international experience with the Kenya Simbas, winger Matoka Matoka landed a brace of tries, one of which he converted as well as a penalty while fly-half Arnold Muita and flanker Barnabas Owuor scored one each. Substitute Bruson Madigu contributed to the victory with three penalties scored and two conversions added.
Strathmore beat Mwamba RFC in Kenya Cup, Mwamba’s tries were dotted down by captain Felix Otieno who crossed over twice while Sylvester Miheso added one more for Kulabu who sank to their second consecutive loss after starting the season with a 25-19 defeat at the hands of Menengai Oilers.
Meanwhile, Oilers also made it two wins in two games after picking victory in enemy territory with a 28-10 trampling of hosts Impala Saracens. The home side failed to make it double victories following their morale boosting derby win over Kenya Harlequin last weekend.
Action between Impala RFC and Menengai Oilers
“It was a good performance away from home and we deservedly earned victory. We had a very good defense but also, there are some areas we need to work on and improve. But overall, I am happy with the boys,” said Oilers coach, former Kenyan international Gibson Weru.
Oilers were in emphatic form as Chrispin Shitundo crossed over twice with Hilary Malweyi and prop Emmanuel Mulindo adding one each. One of the four tries was converted while Timothy Omela accounted four six points after drilling home two penalties.
Paul Mutsami scored Impala’s only try that was converted by Quinton Ongo, before he added on a penalty to their 10-point haul.
Meanwhile at the Nairobi Showground, Quins bounced back from their derby loss to beat hosts Nondies 24-6, condemning them to their second loss of the season.
At the Nakuru Athletic Club, last season’s losing finalists Kabras RFC continued their perfect start as well with a 31-3 win over hosts Nakuru RFC.
In Kakamega, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology continued with their unbeaten streak as they humbled the Homeboyz RFC 22-17 to seal off their second victory of the season.
