The global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic since World War II has caused disruption of the sporting calendar resulting in the cancellation and many crucial sports events postponed by Covid-19.
Some of the international multi-sport events that were affected include;
Summer Olympics
The summer Olympics were scheduled to be held in 2020 in Tokyo Japan but for the first time in history, it was rescheduled to 2021 by the International Olympics Committee on 24 March 2020.
Some countries including Canada, Australia, and Great Britain on 23 March announced that they would withdraw from the Games unless they are postponed to 2021 due to their safety from covid19
The opening ceremonies of the Games were officially rescheduled to 23 July 2021.

Summer World University Games
The Games were scheduled to be held from 16—27 August 2021 but On 2 April 2021, it was announced that the Games would be postponed by one year to 2022 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, with scheduling to be announced at a later date. The Games will continue to be branded as Chengdu 2021. In May 2021, FISU confirmed that the Games had been rescheduled for June 2022
World Games
It’s one of the international sport event that comprise of sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in Olympic Games.
They are usually held after four years and a year after the Summer Olympic Games.
The first edition of this games was held in Santa Clara, USA in 1981 and the next edition will be held in Birmingham, USA from 7-17 July 2022 after the postponement due to Coronavirus pandemic.
World Masters Games
The next world masters games were scheduled to be held in japan between May 14th to 30th in 2022 it was postponed indefinitely after 2022.
This is according to International Masters Games Association in a statement on 28 October. On 12 January 2021, it was announced that the 2021 Games would be scheduled for 13–29 May 2022.
It was again postponed to 2026.
The 2020 World Athletics Indoor championship
The 2020 world athletics indoor championships was scheduled to be held on march 2021 but in December 2020 the event was postponed and it will take place from 17th to 19th march 2023 in Nanjing, Peoples Republic of China at their newly built Nanjing’s Cube gymnasium at the Nanjing youth Olympic Sports Park.
The 2020 World Athletic Half Marathon Championship
The event was originally scheduled to be held in March 2020 in Gdynia Poland but it was postponed until 17th October 2020.
The 2020 London Marathon
The 2020 London marathon was the 40th running of the annual marathon race in London and it took place on 4th October.
It was initially scheduled to be held on 26th April 2020 but due to covid19 pandemic it was rescheduled making it the first London Marathon race to be held in the autumn.
On August it was confirmed that the marathon would go on but as an elite-only race with spectators locked out of the event.

Winter Olympics
Although the next Winter Olympics are not until 2022 (hosted by Beijing, China), the pandemic has already impacted qualifying in specific sports such as Curling where the World Curling Federation announced a proposal to have qualification be dependent on performance in the 2021 world championships (whose top teams will automatically qualify) and a final qualification tournament, as opposed to the previous plan of having qualification determined by both the 2020 and 2021 world championships. Qualification for the women’s hockey tournament was to be determined by IIHF World Rankings after the 2020 Women’s World Championship. As the tournament was cancelled, the existing rankings going into the tournament were used instead.
Arctic Winter Games
This is a biennial multi-sport and indigenous event involving communities from Arctic Sea region and it occurs after every two years
he last games were to be held on in 2020 but it was cancelled while the 2022 games were postponed to 2023.
Winter University
They are commonly known as Lucerne 2021.
It’s a Multi-sport pevent for students and youth athletes scheduled to take place from 11th to 21St December 2021 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
but were postponed indefinitely on 31 August 2020 due to Covid-19. In November, new dates in December 2021 were announced. On 29 November 2021, only one week prior to the start of the preliminary competition, it was announced that the 2021 Winter Universiade had been cancelled due to travel restrictions imposed by the Swiss government to prevent the spread of Omicron variant. The Games will not be rescheduled.
