The Catalan club is lining to sell Netherlands international midfielder Frenkie de Jong and reports reveal that English club Liverpool is willing to land the most talented midfielder in the game presently.

With Barcelona’s current contract running until 2026, Diario AS reports that De Jong will be sold by Barcelona as one of the reasons for them to raise money and are expecting to receive huge offers from big European clubs given De Jong exciting talent.

According to Transfermarkt the Dutchman is the most valued player in La Liga with a market value of $102 million.

Barcelona have been suffering from a much-publicized financial crisis and is estimated to be around $1,5b in debt.

This has made it very difficult for them to register new signings, with Lionel Messi unable to sign a fresh contract and this subsequently leaving to join PSG on a Bosman this summer.

Barca’s only transfer business ahead of the 2021-22 campaign were free transfers such as Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero, players who were also registered with great difficulty.

However, Barcelona, which is in desperate need of funds ahead of the upcoming transfer windows, are ready to accept offers from $78 million for De Jong, according to Teamtalk.

It has been reported that although new head coach Xavi Hernandez is in no hurry to make new signings, the club has set a budget of less than $11 million for the winter window in January.

Xavi reportedly rates upcoming midfielders Pedri and Gavi highly and believes they can fill in any gap created by De Jong’s departure. De Jong, who moved from Ajax to Barcelona in 2019, is not having the best of the seasons in 2021-22 because of poor form and injuries.

With the exit of Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint Germain on a free transfer, Liverpool was left in dire need of a midfielder who can fit in his shoes. Gini was a core part of the Reds side that won four trophies between 2019 and 2020.

Liverpool’s sporting director, Michael Edwards, is believed to be seeing De Jong’s move to Anfield as an excellent parting gift as he is set to leave the club after being associated with it for a decade.

Xavi could use the cash from De Jong’s transfer to sign either Raheem Sterling from Manchester City or RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.

Liverpool is expected to flex muscle with their E English side Manchester City who are eyeing for the midfielder, this is after reports emerged that Barca wants to sign sterling and several reports say that Man City could include De Jong as a part of a swap deal for the Englishman.
