Barcelona star player Gerard Piqué and his Columbian pop star fiancée Shakira are the epitome of celebrity love life.
Pique’s football career was always on a high before he met Shakira during the 2010 World Cup. After their love blossomed, his football career became more successful.
How Did Shakira Make Gerard Piqué Outperform Himself In 2010 World Cup?
Piqué recalls meeting Shakira for the first time in 2010 in Madrid Spain. She was shooting her video for ‘Waka Waka’ hit that was an anthem for the 2010 World Cup.
From this point, his heart made a firm decision to pursue the Columbian singer. What he did not know is that she was the woman who would push his national team, Spain to victory.

“The first time I met Shakira, it was in Madrid while filming the music video for her song “Waka Waka” for the 2010 World Cup. I asked for her number,” he recalls.
“She arrived in South Africa before us (the Spanish national team) because she was singing at the opening ceremony.”
And, the simple text of ‘How’s the weather like’ booked him a slot in Shakira’s headspace. What followed was nothing short of a fairy tale in the pitch and in his heart.
“I sent her a text to find out what the weather was like since we were arriving a few days later. In general, when you ask a question this stupid, you get an answer like “It’s cold, bring a coat”. But she wrote a long paragraph with details about the change in temperature during the day. I said to myself: “Jesus, that’s not normal”.”
So, as the message exchange continued Shakira made it clear she would see if Spain made it to the finals. And they eventually did facing off with the Netherlands in the final match.
Andrés Iniesta scored the one and final goal for Spain. At last, Pique’s efforts paid off and his love story with Shakira started then.
“…the only chance I’d get to see her was if we made the final because she was performing in the closing ceremony. So I told her if I had to make it all the way to the final just to see her, I would.”
How Did Pique’s Relationship With Pep Guardiola Change After Dating Shakira?
After winning the 2010 World Cup, Piqué officially started dating Shakira. In the 2011 season, he recalls that his relationship with the then Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola took a nosedive.
This was not always the case. The two enjoyed a great relationship since 2008 and even won La Liga and Champions League titles.
But, after Shakira came to the picture, Piqué recalls he felt under so much pressure from Guardiola.
“We arrived at an important point of tension, and with the dressing room in general,” he told Marca in the past.
He was not comfortable with Guardiola’s management style and it irritated him so much.
“I started going out with Shakira and the relationship with him changed. Now the relationship is perfect. I had a lot of pressure. I felt that in training I had to do everything perfect.
“If there were moments that I considered leaving Barcelona, it was that last season.”

What Happened After Guardiola Left Barcelona?
Although Piqué was at his patience end, Guardiola left after the 2012 season. He decided to stay on at Camp Nou and won his team five more La Liga titles and a Champions League.
His relationship with Guardiola later softened up after leaving Barca and they are good friends today.
Together with Shakira, Piqué has two kids with the pop star although their relationship has often been questioned.
Shakira has made it clear that she is not into marriage but she is fully committed to Piqué. In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, she lightly described Piqué as her baby daddy.
“He’s my baby daddy,” she said jokingly while explaining how much her two kids with the Camp Nou player mean to her. Shakira adds that her mind is always with her two children and whenever there is an issue, he “tortures’ her fiancee because ‘ he is good at problem-solving.
