Tusker hope to wrap up league title in penultimate match

Tusker FC will be crowned Kenyan Premier League champions on Wednesday if they win their penultimate match of the season against Nzoia Sugar in Bungoma and second placed KCB drop points when they play AFC Leopards in Thika.

Three points separate the two sides on top of the standings with two rounds of matches left and if both win today, then the brewers will only need a point against Bidco United in their final match of the season on Sunday.

But, Tusker will be keen to win their away tie against Nzoia and ensure they are in a safe space heading to the Sunday games. They have lost only one away match this season, a 2-1 defeat to Bandari two weeks ago.

With back to back wins against Sofapaka and Kakamega Homeboyz, head coach Robert Matano remains confident his side can go on and finish the job with the last two games.

“The motivation has really improved and I am happy with the mental strength of my players. We lost two games in a town but managed to rise and get back to winning ways. It was a tough period to lose those two games but now we are lucky to be back on top. We can’t afford to lose again,” said Tusker FC coach Robert Matano.

Against Nzoia, a side they narrowly managed to beat 1-0 in the first leg in Nairobi, the coach knows it will not be an easy task.

“Nzoia are a tough side especially playing at home and we know it is not going to be a walk in the park. But we are ready. We have trained well and our focus is on getting the three points,” further stated the coach.

Meanwhile, KCB will be facing an AFC Leopards side keen to firm up a third spot chase. The bankers have dropped points in the last two matches to essentially see their chase clamped down. A drop in points against AFC will give Tusker a free hand on the crown.

Coach Zedekiah Otieno is not giving up hope despite fate slipping off their hands.

“We will fight till the end because it is not over until the last game. We have slipped a bit in the last two games but we have to look back and correct on the things we were not doing okay. It will be tough against Leopards but we will give it our best,” said coach Otieno.

Leopards are fourth in the standings with 47 points, two behind third placed Bandari and coach Patrick Aussems wants his side to give it their all as they chase a top three finish. He says finishing among the top three will be a positive achievement for his side after a rather difficult season.

“At the moment we are basically looking at building up the side for next season and see who we need where, but it will also be good for our confidence if we can manage to finish in the top three. We know we can make it and we know we face two tough matches, but we are up for it,” said the tactician.

Leopards won the first leg 2-1 and they will be keen to complete a double to not only firm up their chase for third but also boost their confidence heading into the final round of matches.

Meanwhile, Bandari will be playing away to Sofapaka and a loss coupled with a Leopards win will will see the dockers drop down to fourth.

In other matches, Gor Mahia plays Posta Rangers at Ruaraka, while relegation fighting Mathare United take on Ulinzi Stars.
