Vihiga Queens eye CECAFA ticket to inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League

Vihiga Queens have vowed to use the disappointment of losing their Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League title to battle for the ticket to represent the country at the inaugural edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The tournament will be held for the first time in Morocco later in the year and CAF has organized regional qualifiers with winners in each of the five regions earning a ticket to the final tournament.

Kenya will host the CECAFA region qualifiers with nine teams battling it out for the sole ticket.

“We are very well prepared for this task. Having lost the league title, that will be our motivation as we prepare for this tournament. We always believe that every setback, there must be a comeback and the comeback has to be greater than the setback,” Vihiga tactician Alex Alumirah said as the team continued preparing for the tournament.

Vihiga failed to successfully defend their League title after being ousted in the semi-final of the play offs. They had erstwhile won the title four times in a row.

Skipper Enez Mango also stated as much, saying they are determined to clinch the trophy and earn a ticket to represent Kenya in the tournament.

“This is a great opportunity especially for us as players to showcase our talent to the rest of the continent. We have no pressure ahead of the tournament but we know that it is a big task ahead of us. We are preparing well and everyone is focused and ready to battle for the ticket,” Mango, an ex Harambee Starlets player stated.

Vihiga have been drawn in Group C and will be up against Scandinavian (Rwanda), and FAD Club (Djibouti) in the regional tournament that will be played between July 17, and August 1, 2021, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Group A is comprised of Lady Doves (Uganda), PVP Buyenzi (Burundi), and Simba Queens (Tanzania), while Group B will have Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Yei Join Stars (South Sudan), and New Generations FC (Zanzibar).
