Novak Djokovic pulls out of ATP 1000 Toronto ahead of US Open 2021

As the Tokyo Olympics debuts, tennis star now has made the news that he will miss the ATP 1000 in Toronto ahead of US Open 2021.

For those who might not be well familiar with what ATP Masters is an annual series of nine tennis tournaments featuring the top-ranked players on the ATP Tour.

The series of events have been held in different places across the world. They have taken place in Europe and North America, since the debut of the ATP Tour in the year 1990.

The also took place in Asia since year 2009.

Having the best seasons of his career, Novak will not be playing in the ATP 1000. This comes as a disappointment to all his fans and mostly the Serbians.

The tennis sensation is currently eyeing a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Moreover, he has expressed confidence that he will achieve it.

If he wins a gold medal in Tokyo, he will push forward his Golden Slam quest, which will be a great achievement of his career.

Djokovic’s participation in Tokyo thus has resulted in him making changes in his US Open 2021 preparation schedule, which is quite understandable.

The tennis icon was joined by Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka after the news.

This comes after Novak Djokovic confirmed that he will be participating in the most awaited Tokyo Olympics.

In his Twitter handle, the Serbian revealed that he would be on the next flight to Tokyo, something that really impressed his fans.

Earlier on, it was announced by Tennis Canada that Novak would not be taking part in Toronto this year.

Being a 20-time Grand Slam champion, it was expected that Novak would have made impressive scores in Toronto.

However, the tournament director of the National Bank Open expressed her views regarding the withdrawal.

Karl Hale explained Djokovic’s decision and this is what she had to say;

“It would have been fantastic to have hosted Novak,” Hale said. “However, following a great run to his record-equaling 20th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and his participation at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, we understand his decision. We wish him all the very best for the rest of the season.”

Hale as well revealed and confirmed the withdrawal of tennis players Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka and David Goffin.

The trio pulled after citing injury woes according to the report given by Hale. Thiem is the reigning US Open champion while Stan is a three-time Grand Slam winner.

With the withdrawal of Novak, all eyes are now on Daniil Medvedev. It is expected that Daniil would consequently take Novak’s place as the top seed in ATP 1000 in Toronto.

According to Essentially sports, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are still among the players’ fields, as confirmed by Rogers Cup’s previous entry list.

Federer and Nadal are celebrated tennis players who are as well 20-time Grand Slam champions.

The much-awaited tournament is set to run between August 9 and August 15, 2021.

Novak has won the first three Grand Slam titles, with Tokyo gold and the US Open remaining. For one to win a Golden Slam, a tennis player is expected to win a whopping four Grand Slam tournaments of the year. Additionally, the player should have achieved an Olympic gold medal.

Therefore, if Djokovic completes the achievement, he will become the first male tennis player to do so. Additionally, he would be second to German legend Steffi Graf who fulfilled the ultimate tennis feat in 1988.

Djokovic made his first Grand Slam tournament appearance by qualifying for the 2005 Australian Open.

Djokovic reached the top 40 in the world singles rankings after making his first quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam event, coming at the French Open, and also by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon that year.

Three weeks after Wimbledon, Djokovic won his first ATP title at the Dutch Open in Amersfoort.
