Brighton record monumental 1 0 win over Liverpool at Anfield - Sports Leo

Brighton and Hove Albion snatched a historic 1 0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp did not start Ozan Kabak or Ben Davies, their January signings at the back, despite the latter being named on the bench.

The German’ tactics did not pay off as the defensive sloppiness gave Brighton a lead in the 56th minute.

Steven Alzate made the Premier League champions pay as he took advantage of Nathaniel Phillips’ poor defensive clearance in the box to slot a loose ball in the back of the net.

It was Brighton’s first away win at the champions backyard in over three and a half-decade to shatter the Reds hopes of retaining their domestic league title.

The results meant the Merseyside Red club sit fourth on the log with 40 points, seven points behind log leaders Manchester City who have a game in hand.

City earlier beat Burnley 2 0 with Brazilian Gabriel Jesus and Englishman Raheem Sterling getting on the scoresheet in the third and 38th minute respectively.

Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Anfield over the weekend to play Klopp’s men in a Premier League fixture that could determine Liverpool’s chances of getting back to the title race.

Liverpool looked to bounce back from their home defeat against Burnley after beating Tottenham and West Ham and looked like they had their mojo back.

Liverpool have lost back to back home games for the first time in the top-flight Premiership since 2012.

“A really tough week, two away games, two very intense games and tonight we looked like we weren’t fresh enough mentally and physically,” Klopp said in a post-match interview.

“A lot of moments where we gave the ball away too easily. In moments the boys looked tired mentally.

“We didn’t look convincing. We make more changes and then we have no rhythm so it’s a problem.”
