Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has tested positive for Covid-19 for the second time after taking another fresh test on Monday.

Osimhen tested positive on his return to Italy from his home country in New Year’s Day.

He has since been in self-isolation as per the rules and guidelines required.

However, ten days later Italian club Napoli disclosed that the player is still positive.

The Serie A club on Monday tweeted: “The molecular nasopharyngeal swab carried out this morning to the footballer Victor Osimhen, resulted in a positive result in Covid-19.

“The player will repeat the test this week.”

It is believed that Osimhen contracted the virus during his short stay in Nigeria, while attending a surprise birthday party.

The Naples expressed their disappointment for the forward’s reckless conduct.

A video surfaced online of his wayward behaviour in the social gathering where he was spraying money without a facial mask.

The Super Eagles attacker issued an apology to the club and his fans for his misconduct during the celebrations.

“I am so sorry for what happened, I was wrong to go to Nigeria in this moment, even if I have many loved ones over there, including my brothers,” he said.

“I was wrong to take part in the party. I didn’t understand the severity of what I was doing. I apologise to the club, the coach, the team, and the fans.”

Napoli coach Genarro Gattuso accepted his apology on behalf of the club and said, “He knows he’s made a mistake and he’s apologised.”

21-year-old Osimhen has been out of football action for both club and country since dislocating his shoulder in  November 2020.

Osimhen became the most expensive Nigerian player of all time and the most expensive African player of all time after making an over  $96 million move from French club Lille to Napoli in August.

He has recorded two goals in eight appearances for the Naples.
