Liverpool have finally met Bayern Munich’s asking price for Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
The Premier League champions were reluctant to meet the £27.3 million valuation fee for the player as they deemed it expensive.
The 29-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from Munich with Anfield being his preferred destination.
Manchester United and Manchester City were also interested in the former Barcelona player but nothing materialized.
The former were on the brink of making an official bid for the playmaker but Liverpool acted fast to land the midfielder.
Alcantara, who refused to renew his contract with 2019/20 UEFA Champions League winners, is expected to sign a four-year deal at Anfield.
His arrival could catalyze the departure of Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Dutch has been linked with a potential move to Camp Nou, with the Blaugrana tactician Ronald Koeman looking to sign him.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had talked with Wijnaldum about is future at Merseyside, with only a year remaining in his contract.
Wijnaldum has been pivotal for Liverpool especially in the 2018–19 season, when he came off the bench to score twice past Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final second leg comeback as Liverpool went through 4–3 on aggregate.
According to BBC, when asked about a potential move for Thiago last week, Klopp said: “I cannot end speculation as long as the transfer window is open. Did I mention that Thiago Alcantara is a really good player? Long time ago.
“It is nice that we are linked with him but that is pretty much it really. It is because he is a good player and Liverpool is a big club, so that is nice.”
