Tributes from the social media poured in for former Kenyan football star Kevin Oliech who passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2020, at around 7 pm East African Time.
The brother to former Harambee Stars striker Dennis Oliech passed on in a hospital in Germany after succumbing to lung cancer.
Kenya Football Coaches Association (Kenfoca) interim chairman, Robert Matano eulogized the former Harambee Stars as a hardworking, committed and disciplined player.
“Kevin is like my son, my best friend with a good heart and understanding boy, I coached him in Tusker in 2013. I feel sorry to the football fans and the family of Oliech for losing a very young boy like Kevin, my condolences,” senior coach Matano said.
“We would like to send our deepest condolences to the Oliech family following the passing on of Kevin Oliech on Sunday evening. Kevin, who is brother to Dennis Oliech and Andrew Oyombe, was part of the Mathare United squad that won the 2008 KPL title. May he Rest in Peace,” he added.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed also led Kenyans in conveying their heartfelt condolences to the family.
“It is with deep sadness that I have learned of the passing on of Kevin Opiyo Oliech who played for various Kenyan and international clubs.
“Kevin was a talented and hardworking soccer player who made great contributions to the growth of the sport in the country.
“I convey my condolences to the family, friends, relatives, fellow footballers, and the entire sports fraternity for this major loss. May God rest his soul in peace,” she tweeted.
“We would like to pass our condolences to the Oliech family following the death of Kevin “Yeboah” Oliech on Sunday evening.
“Kevin was part of our 2008 title-winning squad and always gave his best whenever he donned the yellow and green jersey. He continued the legacy of the Oliech family at Mathare United adding to Dennis Oliech’s goals and Andrew Oyombe’s composure in midfield.
“His death is a big blow to the Mathare United fraternity and we would like to urge all our alumni to support the Oliech family during these tough times,” his former club, Mathare United posted on their official Facebook page.
