Cricket Namibia (CN) on Wednesday, in Windhoek, launched a national junior initiative to incorporate all youth programs in the Southern African nation.
CN chief executive Johan Muller said: “This competition will be played on a national level to expose and give opportunities to other cricket playing towns.”
“Our vision is that every Namibian child has access to the game in various formats.”
“We will bring cricket into the country through international tours and promote the game of cricket within our country.”
This follows the news that a new junior cricket tournament will be held in Windhoek from August 21 to 25.
The tournament will be called The Annual XCO & APS Junior Cricket Tournament and feature Under-13 and Under-11 age groups.
Traditional 11-player teams, as well as between six and eight-player teams will be allowed. The non-traditional format will be used to attract all levels of competitors.
Last month, CN introduced an Over-40 League competition to keep former players involved in the game.
With a new Over-50 World Cup added to the cricket calendar, although the first edition was scrapped this year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, it gives players incentive to keep fit and playing the sport they love.
Cricket Namibia (CN) said in a statement: “Cricket Namibia participated in the Over-50 World Cup as an invitational side this year in Cape Town, of which CN saw the need to create a local platform, the Over-40s cricket competition.
“This will be a platform that will develop and prepare players for international cricket opportunities.”
