Bestine Kazadi on Wednesday was appointed as the first-ever female club president of Democratic Republic (DR) of Congo side AS Vita Club.

AS Vita Club play in the top division of DR Congo football, and Kazadi won the position during the club’s elective general assembly held in Kinshasa.

Kazadi, a special advisor on cooperation to DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, managed 38 out of a possible 72 votes to rise to the top of the club’s leadership. She is the daughter of the late Pierre Kazadi Tshishishi, also a former chairman of Vita Club’s supreme council.

Her closest challenger, Eugène Diomi Ndongala managed 32 votes. She takes over from Gabriel Amisi Kumba and will be in charge of raising the team’s profile to compete with other top clubs in the country and the continent for a period of four years.

Frank Likuli was, meanwhile, elected as the club’s new general secretary and will be assisted by Jean de Dieu Kipepe. National Congolese television journalist Lenzo Christine earned 38 votes to ascend to the seat of treasurer.

Delou Mulumba, Baye NTita Richard, Mapamboli Poze and Mbonde Mange Maria have been elected to the club’s Executive Committee.

Kazadi’s election comes as a huge boost to women’s football in the continent, barely hours after the Caf executive committee resolved to start a Women’s Champions League tournament from 2021.

DR Congo as of Thursday had 7311 Covid-19 infections, with 2684 recoveries and 179 deaths. There are 4696 active cases currently reported in the Central African country.
