South Sudan calls time on domestic football season - Sports Leo

South Sudan has become the latest Confederation of African Football (Caf) member association to call an end to its domestic football season due to the novel coronavirus pandemic that has halted sport globally.

An emergency committee meeting that was also attended by the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) Board of Directors and chaired by president Francis Amin arrived at the decision after wide consultations. The decision was taken based on Article 81 of the SSFA Statutes.

According to the SSFA, there will be no promotion or relegation across all leagues, and has confirmed Alrabita Juba FC as representatives for next season’s African Confederation Cup having won the South Sudanese Cup tournament.

Meanwhile, dates for the new season once the Ministry of Health advises it is safe to return to football activities.

South Sudan has 481 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with four deaths to date. The country reported its first case on April 5.

Earlier last week, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) confirmed the death of a South Sudanese member of staff and two more, who were injured during intense fighting that erupted over the weekend.

MSF is a non-profit organization that brings healthcare to countries in crisis.

According to a statement by MSF, fighting began in the early hours of the morning on Saturday in and around Pieri, a town in Jonglei State in north-eastern South Sudan where MSF runs a primary health care center.
