Zimbabwe national team player Ovidy Karuru has called on the public to do everything they can in their power to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the African nation.
To date, Zimbabwe have had just 28 cases of COVID-19 reported, but already recorded four deaths.
Karuru, who currently plies his trade for South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Stellenbosch FC, says the only effective way to slow the spread of the virus is by practising social distancing, which means not leaving home unless absolutely necessary to buy food or seek medical care.
“Staying at home means saving lives,” said Karuru. “So please, the people of Zimbabwe, I plead and I beg you to stay at home and be prayerful because only God can save us from the virus.
“This COVID-19 is real, it is killing a lot of people. So, save your brother, save your sister, save a family member, save a friend, by staying at home.
“Once you go out it means the spreading of the virus will be faster. But if you stay at home, that is the only way we can contain it as a family.”
Karuru joined ‘Stellies’ in January from AmaZulu, and netted his first goal in a 1-0 win over Polokwane City.
He has been in the PSL since the 2014/15 season when he signed for Kaizer Chiefs, spending two seasons at Naturena, before the move to Usuthu. He has also previously played in France for Boulogne, and in Belgium with OH Leuven.
The 31-year-old netted six goals in the 2017 Cosafa Cup, including a hattrick against Seychelles, having made his Warriors debut in 2007.
