Ivory Coast’s Wilfried Zaha will represent English Premier League side Crystal Palace in a new online football tournament called the ePremier League Invitational championship.
While the vast majority of the sport worldwide is suspended due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, professional footballers are turning to their computers and gaming consoles to keep that competitive edge.
“The thoughts of everyone at the Premier League are with all those directly affected by COVID-19,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in a press release.
“In response to the pandemic, the League, our clubs and players are providing valuable support for communities and the NHS.
“We are also aware of the importance of finding new ways to entertain fans at this time and we are excited to bring together a strong line-up of players for the ePremier League Invitational tournament.
“With Sky Sports screening the competition live in the UK and many of our international broadcast partners also showing the matches, fans around the world can tune in and enjoy the action.
“We know how popular Fifa 20 is with players and I am looking forward to seeing who will be crowned the ePL Invitational champion.”
Zaha, 27, has been at Crystal Palace for the majority of his career, including 2004 to 2010 in their youth team, Promoted to the senior team in 2010, Zaha made 110 appearances for Palace before a move to Manchester United in 2013. Making just two appearances for United, he was loaned back to Crystal Palace and then Cardiff City.
Once more he returned to Palace on loan in 2014, before making his move permanent in 2015. Since 2015 he has made 176 appearances for Palace, which brought his total appearances for the club to 318. Overall, he has scored 48 goals for Palace.
