Botswana national team athletes in car accident in Gaborone - Sports Leo

Botswana national team athletes, Onkabetse Nkobolo and Baboloki Thebe were involved in a car accident in Gaborone at the weekend, Botswana media reported.

According to a report in Mmegi, the two 400 metre specialists, were supposed to be in camp but, reportedly broke camp rules by going out.

An official from Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) who confirmed the accident to the newspaper on condition of anonymity, said Nkobolo sustained serious injuries, his spine has been affected. The athlete was likely to undergo an operation.

Thebe has been discharged.

Botswana Athletics Association vice president-administration, Oabona Theetso said details were still sketchy.

“I have just arrived in camp and details are sketchy as Thebe is still sleeping. From here I am going to check Nkobolo at the hospital. I will give Thebe a chance to rest so that the trauma goes down,” he told Mmegi.

The Botswana Gazette reported on its Facebook page that divisional traffic officer for Gaborone, Reginald Matlhaba, confirmed the incident.

He noted Nkobolo sustained fractures on his leg while Thebe did not suffer any injuries, the publication reported.

Botswana Daily News reported the two were involved in an accident near Trekkers Night Club.

Botswana athletes are in camp for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
