NBA star Dieng funding initiatives to improve life in Senegal - Sports Leo

Born in Kebemer Department in Senegal, National Basketball Association (NBA) star Gorgui Dieng has come a long way since his humble beginnings – and is using his success, and substantial wealth, to improve life in country of birth.

Currently representing the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA, with earnings reported to be in excess of $16 million this season – the 29-year-old is investing huge amounts in educational and structural projects in Senegal.

Dieng with Matter Pro – an agency which aims to help athletes give back to their communities – has teamed up with the Basketball Africa League to achieve some of the charity goals of the 2.08m tall athlete.

According to forbes.com Dieng contributed $200 000 last season, and will make a similar payment later this month to fund small-scare farmers and fund a hospital in Dakar.

“My hope is that through Matter Pro, other athletes can also embrace causes important to them and create their own personal legacy,” Dieng said.

“There has been a rich history of athletes using their influence to create change in the world. Today, more than ever, there is an expectation for athletes to lead that change,” stated Quenton Marty, President, Matter. “As a result, an incredible opportunity exists for athletes to build their brand around purpose. By leveraging their platform and visibility, athletes can unite and inspire their passionate fan base around cause in a collective effort to multiply their impact, building something that will last.”
