Ghana showed a vastly improved form to score an upset 36-25 win over Botswana in the Rugby Africa Cup 2020 qualifier at the Nduom’s Sports Stadium, Elmina, in the Central Region of Ghana, on Saturday.

Ghana, at 91, is 20 places lower on the World Rugby rankings than Botswana (71). Their victory was all the more satisfying because they outscored Botswana 6-2 in the try count.

President of the Ghana Rugby Association, Herbert Mensah, said his team showed great improvement.

“The victory shows a great improvement of the rugby development in Ghana,” said Mensah.

“Our team will play its next match against Zimbabwe in Harare, and we are determined to continue on our path of success.”

President of Botswana Rugby, Sean Irish, said he was pleased with the performance despite the defeat.

“Despite our defeat, I am pleased with the performance of the squad,” said Irish.

“What the team showed in this match proves that Rugby in Botswana is developing.”

Ghana’s captain Alexander Dorpenyo said afterwards his team was determined to win this qualifier.

“We went into this match with a strong determination to win and we made it happen,” he said
