Veteran goalkeeper Juma Kaseja was the hero for Tanzania as they edged Burundi 3-0 on penalties to reach the next round of the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
The 34-year-old saved Omar Ngando’s penalty to send the Taifa Stars into the next round after a 1-1 draw tied the result 2-2 on aggregate.
Kaseja was also the hero in similar circumstances as Tanzania progressed to the second qualification round of the African Nations Championship (Chan) against Kenya last July.
The experienced Kaseja showed his prowess in penalties, saving once while Burundi struck two wide with Tanzania scoring all of their kicks.
Erasto Nyoni, Himid Mao and Gadiel Michael scored as Tanzania coach Etienne Ndayiragije eliminated his country of birth.
While Ngando was denied by Kaseja, the experienced duo of Saido Berahino and Gael Bigirimana struck wide.
Earlier, Mbwana Samatta had given Tanzania the lead on 29 minutes before Abdul Razak Fiston levelled just before the break.
In Malabo, Emilio Nsue scored the only goal as Equatorial Guinea beat South Sudan and advance 2-1 on aggregate.
Ethiopia and Liberia survived away from home to book their places at the next stage.
Ethiopia advanced after managing a 1-1 draw against Lesotho in Maseru, going through on the away goal rule after a 1-1 tie on aggregate.
After a barren first-half, the Walias went up on 50 minutes when a cross by Mesfin Tafesse deflected off Nkau Lerotholi for the opener.
Seven minutes later, a free-kick by Tsepo Seturumane glanced Tafesse and went into the net for the equaliser.
Elsewhere in Freetown, Liberia goalkeeper Ashley Williams saved a last-gasp penalty from Sierra Leone captain Umaru Bangura to secure the Lone Stars’ passage.
After Kei Kamara had put Sierra Leone up on 55 minutes, Bangura was offered a golden chance on the stroke of added-on time, but his effort was no trouble for Williams who collected the ball calmly.
Liberia marched through 3-2 on aggregate.
