Gloucester coach Johan Ackermann has signed Stormers prop Corné Fourie on a short-term contract with the view to adding depth to the club’s front-row resources.
The 31-year-old, capable of playing hooker or loosehead prop, will add vast experience to the Cherry and Whites squad. Previously with the Blue Bulls, Pumas and Lions, Fourie has represented the Lions and Stormers in Super Rugby as well as spending time in Japan with the Panasonic Wild Knights.
Capped at Under- 20 level by South Africa, he has also represented the South African Barbarians and will be a welcome addition to the squad according to Director of Rugby, David Humphreys.
“Corné’s versatility will be incredibly useful to us, especially with James Hanson continuing with his rehabilitation following surgery towards the end of last season.
“He’s played a lot of Super Rugby and featured in some high-profile games such as Super Rugby semifinals and finals.
“He will fit in quickly as there are a number of his former teammates here, and will add strength in depth to a key area of the squad.”
And Fourie admitted that he’s excited to embark upon a new chapter in his career.
“Like so many others in South Africa, I’ve kept a close eye on Gloucester Rugby since Coach Akkers moved there and I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen.
“And, of course, so many of my former teammates are now part of the Gloucester Rugby squad, so I’m looking forward to linking up with them and meeting the rest of the other players and staff.
“The Gallagher Premiership is a very tough league, with some top-class teams and I can’t wait to test myself over in England and hopefully help the team to achieve great success.”
