Ghana set up Women’s Olympic qualifier against Kenya

Ghana beat Gabon to progress to the next round - Sports Leo

Ghana’s Black Queens have booked a date with the Harambee Starlets of Kenya in the third qualifying round of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after beating Gabon 2-0 in Accra on Tuesday.

Coach Mercy Tagoe’s side went into the game 3-0 winners from the first leg played in Libreville last week and looked comfortable on the ball right from the opening whistle.

They nearly opened the score in the third minute when Grace Animah managed to beat the offside trap. But after dribbling past goalkeeper Okila Ndizila of Gabon, her shot hit the post and went out of play.

It was all Ghana in the opening minutes as captain Portia Boakye, Juliet Acheampong and Animah gave the Gabonese defence some nervy moments.

Ghana eventually got their goal in the 16th minute through Boakye, who rounded the keeper and beat on-rushing defender Edzoumoli Reine before coolly tapping home for the opener.

Visitors Gabon then managed to take control of the midfield, pinning the Ghanaians in their half for a considerable amount of time, but they couldn’t convert any of the chances they managed to create.

Ghana increased the lead in the 70th minute when Acheampong scored the second goal to seal the victory.

The Queens progressed to the next stage 5-0 on aggregate and will now meet Kenya, who saw off Malawi 5-3 on aggregate.
