New Zealand surrender World No 1 ranking to Wales

Wales have climbed to No 1 in the World Rugby Rankings for the first time since it was introduced in October 2003, while South Africa have moved up to No 4.

New Zealand’s All Blacks had previously been at the top of the rankings for 509 consecutive weeks.

But, despite their Bledisloe Cup victory against Australia over the weekend, it wasn’t enough to prevent Wales from securing the top spot.

The Welsh’s charge to the summit of the rankings came courtesy of their victory over England at the weekend.

Wales’ rating has this week increased to 89.43 points, which is three-hundredths of a point ahead of New Zealand.

South Africa’s win against Argentina in Pretoria on Saturday saw them overtake England in the rankings.
