Ivorian star Gervinho and has been left out of the Elephants’ 23-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The tournament will kick off on June 21 with the host tackling Zimbabwe in their opening group match.

32-year-old Gervinho has enjoyed a scintillating season with Serie A side Parma, which should have earned him an automatic call up to the national team. The veteran winger scored 11 goals and recorded four assists in 30 appearances in the Italian league last season.

The former AS Roma and Arsenal star has featured in five Cup of Nations and his experience in the competition would be crucial.

Among those Ivory Coast coach Ibrahim Kamara will look to for goals in Egypt is Nicolas Pepe, runner-up to French star Kylian Mbappe in the 2018/2019 Ligue 1 Golden Boot race.

Now, Ivory Coast coach Ibrahim Kamara will turn to 24-year-old Lille winger Nicolas Pepe for goals. The Liverpool target was second to French star Kylian Mbappe in the 2018/2019 Ligue 1 Golden Boot race scoring 19 goals.

Other attacking options include former Swansea player Wilfried Bony and Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha, who has impressed in the Premier League.

Many Ivorian fans were disappointed with the coach’s decision to leave out Gervinho, as the Elephants prepare to face South Africa, Namibia, and Morocco in Gropu D

“Dear Ivorians, I don’t know how to thank you for all the messages of support and affection I’ve received (since) my first call up,” he posted on social media.

“Receiving your videos, photos, and comments lately warm my heart.

“All this has helped reduce my disappointment not to be part of the team that will defend our colors at the next Afcon (Cup of Nations) in Egypt.”
