Manchester City has rewarded backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno with a one-year contract extension, that will run until 2026, having proved himself as a reliable backup for this season 2023-24.

The goalkeeper has won Manchester City’s trust with his impressive performance and they decided to add a one-year contract to his already existing one, which was to expire in June 2025. With the one-year extension, he will be at the club until 2026.

He arrived at Manchester City in 2022 on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld. Initially, he was to be a backup to Ederson. The established goalkeeper sustained an injury and he took over, filling the void by making crucial saves.

His career journey has been a progressive one, climbing the ranks of German football. His starting step was with local clubs like TVS Jahn Calden, KSV Baunatal, and KSV Hessen Kassel before joining Arminia Bielefeld youth academy.

He made his senior debut for Arminia Bielefeld where he primarily served as a backup goalkeeper in regional participations, later establishing himself as a reliable option in the 2. Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld and later TSV 1860 Munich.

He signed with Manchester City in 2022 on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld, a step up from a German second-division club to a Premier League giant, where he played as a backup goalkeeper.

He played alongside Ederson who is a starter and proved himself upon being called up and in his first season with Man City, he made a crucial save in the Champions League group stage victory against Sevilla.

ORTEGA’S BREAKTHROUGH WITH MANCHESTER CITY

In 2022, he signed a contract with Manchester City on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld, a move that represented a significant step for the player from a German second-division club to a Premier League giant.

He took up the mantle of a backup goalkeeper with Ederson playing as a starter and proved himself upon being called upon. In his first season, he made a crucial save in the Champions League group stage victory against Sevilla, and the EFL Cup third-round win against Chelsea.

In the 2023-24 season, he made a save in Premier League matches against Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur that were important in Manchester City’s title run. In City’s FA Cup campaign, he played every match and only conceded one goal in six matches.

MANCHESTER CITY REWARD ORTEGA MORENO WITH A NEW DEAL

Manchester City recently extended Ortega’s contract by one year, keeping him at the club until 2026, a sign of his importance to the team. With Ederson still playing as a starter, he will continue to play a vital backup role.

He has proved himself as a reliable backup for Ederson, his experience and composure ensuring a seamless transition whenever called upon. His contribution became crucial during the 2023-24 season when Manchester City’s starter Ederson sustained an injury in a match against Liverpool.

His ability to fill in the gap came during a critical period of the season and this proved him to be a factor in City’s success by not only maintaining their defensive solidity but also swinging matches in their favor, contributing to their title win.

During this match, Pep Guardiola was impressed with his performance and values his impact beyond just on-field performance.
